The Buddhist Thangka painting of Guru Rinpoche with a rainbow body shows him sitting on a lotus with petals that alternate between orange and red and blue. The thangka imagines his body glowing rainbow colours and seeming exquisite. Behind him, the Nimbus and Halo likewise radiate various colours, simulating a brilliant sun. 

Beginning with the great master Padmasambhava in the eighth century, Buddhism has a rainbow body tradition. The rainbow body of the Tibetan Buddhists is the product of years of focused, rigorous practice motivated by a deep compassion for all beings. The practitioners, ranging from the most eminent lamas to the lowest individuals, have achieved rainbow bodies.
